Self compassion is the foundation of all compassion

It’s often said that we can’t pour from an empty cup, and this mantra captures that sentiment perfectly. “May I be kind to myself, so I may be kind to others” is a reminder that self-compassion is the foundation of all compassion. When we prioritize our own well-being, we strengthen our ability to show up fully for others. Too often, we are quick to extend kindness to those around us while neglecting our own needs. But by giving ourselves the same love and care we offer to others, we create a deeper reservoir of compassion to share. Self-kindness is not selfish—it’s essential for cultivating a life of love and connection.

Our mantra for the week is…

May I be kind to myself, so I may be kind to others.

Our journaling prompts are…

What areas of my life need more self-kindness right now, and how can I begin to nurture them?

How does practicing kindness toward myself allow me to show up more fully and compassionately for others?

And our meditation is…a meditation to connect to self compassion

Sit in a comfortable position and close your eyes. Take a few deep breaths, letting go of any tension with each exhale.

As you breathe, bring your awareness inward. Notice how you feel in this moment—physically, mentally, and emotionally—without judgment. Silently repeat the mantra: “May I be kind to myself, so I may be kind to others.”

As you repeat this mantra, focus on extending kindness toward yourself. Imagine wrapping yourself in a warm, gentle embrace of compassion. Acknowledge that you deserve the same kindness you offer to others.

With each inhale, breathe in kindness and understanding. With each exhale, release any harsh self-judgment or criticism. Let yourself be fully present with the intention of self-compassion. Know that by being kind to yourself, you are better equipped to share kindness with the world.

After a few minutes, gently bring your awareness back to your surroundings. Take a deep breath, and when you’re ready, open your eyes, carrying this sense of self-kindness with you into your day.
